Depending upon your location, some battery types are now considered hazardous “universal waste” and it is illegal to dispose of hazardous batteries in the trash or curbside recycling container. Due to safety concerns, the Department of Transportation (DOT) has issued several regulations regarding management requirements for lithium battery shipments especially. The improper disposal of batteries can cause fires, soil contamination and water pollution; therefore it is extremely important for customers to follow procedures and supplemental information provided with Heritage kits to maximize transportation safety.
Our Battery Recycling Containers are often referred to as small and medium battery exceptions, which are found in DOT regulations at 49 CFR 173.185(c), and shipment of lithium batteries through normal mail channels is generally allowed with our containers. However, there may be some exceptions so please call our customer service if you have any questions or concerns.
